How it is calculated
Based on Erik Widmark’s pharmacokinetic model (1932) with updates by A.W. Jones (2010). Factors in gender-specific body water distribution (r = 0.68 for men, 0.55 for women), gastric ADH oxidation, and linear elimination rate (0.15 ‰/h).

How Alcohol Is Metabolized in the Body
Gastric and intestinal absorption
Approximately 20% of alcohol is absorbed through gastric mucosa, while 80% is rapidly absorbed in the duodenum and jejunum. Food delays gastric emptying, flattening peak BAC.
Hepatic enzymatic breakdown
The liver metabolizes up to 95% of ethanol at a constant rate via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) into toxic acetaldehyde, which aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) rapidly converts to acetate.
Zero-order linear elimination
Hepatic clearance saturates quickly (zero-order kinetics): the rate of blood alcohol decline is strictly ~0.15 ‰ per hour regardless of how much was consumed.

Why women reach higher BAC than men of equal weight
First, female physiology features lower total body water (55% vs 68% in men), so identical ethanol doses dissolve into less fluid volume, driving higher blood concentrations. Second, gastric alcohol dehydrogenase (gastro-ADH) activity is genetically 40–50% lower in women.
How alcohol disrupts sleep architecture
Although ethanol exerts sedative effects that accelerate sleep onset, its nighttime hepatic metabolism triggers sympathetic rebound during the second half of the night. Ethanol suppresses REM sleep, impairing memory consolidation and leaving you feeling unrefreshed.

Frequently asked questions
Can saunas, coffee, or exercise speed up alcohol elimination?
No. Over 90–95% of ethanol is metabolized by hepatic enzymes (ADH and CYP2E1), whose throughput is rigidly constant. Less than 5–10% exits via sweat, breath, and urine. Saunas while intoxicated are dangerous due to arrhythmia and cardiovascular collapse risks.
Why are calories from alcohol termed 'empty'?
Each gram of ethanol yields 7.1 kcal (nearly as dense as dietary fat). Because the body cannot store toxic ethanol, it diverts all metabolic capacity to burning it off first, entirely shutting down hepatic fat oxidation.
How long does alcohol remain detectable on breathalyzers?
The blood-to-breath alcohol partition ratio is approximately 2,100:1 (Henry's Law). Alcohol is exhaled as long as free ethanol circulates through alveolar pulmonary capillaries.
Why do hangovers worsen with advancing age?
Aging decreases total body water percentage, reduces functional liver volume, and slows ALDH enzyme activity, causing toxic acetaldehyde to linger in circulation longer.
Does activated charcoal or enterobsorbents prevent intoxication?
The ethanol molecule is tiny and polar, so activated charcoal cannot effectively bind it in the gut. Sorbents may only minimally bind minor congener impurities and fusel oils.
