How it is calculated

Based on WHO and EFSA standards (14 g fiber per 1,000 kcal, minimum 25 g for women and 38 g for men). Automatically calculates required compensatory hydration (+40 mL water per gram of fiber) and adjusts for IBS.

Limits of the method

In small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or active IBD flares, high fermentable fiber may exacerbate gas and pain. Fiber titration must be gradual.

Why does increasing fiber cause bloating and gas?

Colonic bacteria ferment fiber, producing gases (hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane). When the microbiome is not yet adapted to high volumes, jumping abruptly from 10 to 35 g induces bloating. Increase fiber intake gradually by 3–5 g per week.

What is the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber?

Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a viscous gel, slowing glucose absorption and binding bile acids. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve; it attracts water like a sponge and accelerates bowel transit.

Does dietary fiber contain calories?
