How it is calculated

The glycemic index describes how fast glucose rises after a portion containing 50 g of carbohydrate, but says nothing about the size of a real serving. Glycemic load accounts for both: the index is multiplied by the carbohydrate in the actual serving and divided by 100. That is why watermelon has a high index yet a low load — a serving carries little carbohydrate.

Limits of the method

Published index values are averages: variety, ripeness, milling, cooking and the presence of protein, fat and fibre all change the glucose response. Individual responses vary widely, and in diabetes this calculation does not replace glucose measurement or monitoring data.

How to calculate Glycemic Load (GL)

The difference between Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load

Glycemic Index (GI) only measures how fast a food converts to glucose compared to pure sugar. Glycemic Load (GL) takes both speed AND actual carbohydrate quantity into account: GL = (GI × Net Carbs in portion) / 100. This makes GL far more clinically meaningful for blood sugar control.

How to blunt the glycemic impact of meals

Meal composition alters glucose absorption. Combining carbohydrates with quality protein (fish, eggs), soluble fiber (greens, legumes), and healthy fats slows gastric emptying and flattens glucose spikes.

Why does watermelon have a high GI but low GL?

Watermelon is over 90% water. While its carbs digest quickly (GI 72), a standard serving contains very few total grams of carbohydrate, causing an insignificant rise in blood sugar (GL < 5).

What daily glycemic load is recommended for metabolic health?

Maintaining a total daily GL under 80–100 units protects against insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular complications.

Does cooking temperature affect GI and GL?

Yes. Overcooking starchy foods gelatinizes starch and raises GI. Cooling cooked starches (potatoes, rice) creates retrograded resistant starch, lowering GL.

Does a low-GL diet help with fat loss?

Yes. Low-GL meals avoid hypoglycemic crashes 2–3 hours after eating, curbing cravings and making a calorie deficit effortless.

Should individuals without diabetes care about GL?

Yes. Chronic postprandial glucose spikes promote oxidative stress, arterial endothelial dysfunction, and long-term insulin resistance.
