How it is calculated
The baseline is 30 ml per kg of body weight for adults and 25 ml/kg after 60, when renal concentrating ability declines. Each hour of intense activity adds 500 ml to cover sweat losses, and a hot climate or dry heated room adds another 500 ml. The total is full water requirement; 20–30% of it comes from food, so the amount that must come from drinks is shown separately (EFSA, 2010).

Limits of the method
A reference point for healthy adults. In heart or kidney failure, on diuretics, during fever and in hot industrial work the target is set by a physician. Thirst and urine colour remain more reliable guides than any formula.

How to calculate your daily water requirement
Enter body weight
Baseline physiological water need is directly proportional to mass (approx. 30–35 ml per kg, or ~0.5 fl oz per lb).
Account for physical exercise
Add 350–500 ml (12–16 fl oz) of fluid for every 30 minutes of sweat-inducing exercise.
Adjust for temperature & climate
Hot weather (>25°C / 77°F) or dry indoor climates increase respiratory and transdermal water loss by ~500 ml.
Real-world hydration examples
Weight 65 kg (143 lb), temperate climate
Baseline requirement: ~1,950 ml. Approx. 1,600 ml from fluids (~6–7 glasses) and 400–500 ml from water in food.
Weight 75 kg (165 lb), resistance training
Baseline 2,250 ml plus 700 ml sweat replacement. Sip 150–200 ml every 15–20 minutes during training.
Weight 85 kg (187 lb), heat >28°C (>82°F)
Base 2,550 ml + 500 ml climate compensation + 800 ml activity. Important to maintain dietary sodium.
Why the generic "8 glasses a day" is an outdated myth
There is no universal one-size-fits-all water volume. Both EFSA and the US National Academy of Medicine emphasize that fluid requirements depend on body mass, sweat rate, and activity. A 50 kg individual does not need the same hydration as a 90 kg athlete.

Dehydration signs and urine color tracking
Thirst is a delayed signal, triggered after you have already lost 1–2% of fluid mass. Check urine color: pale straw or light yellow signifies optimal hydration; dark amber warns of dehydration.
Frequently asked questions
Do coffee and tea count towards water intake?
Yes. Peer-reviewed research confirms that moderate caffeine consumption (up to 3–4 cups daily) hydrates effectively without net fluid loss in habitual consumers.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes. Excessive water intake without sodium can cause hyponatremia (water intoxication), diluting blood sodium to dangerous levels. Normal kidneys process about 800–1,000 ml per hour.
Does drinking water with meals impair digestion?
No. Water does not dilute digestive enzymes to any clinically significant degree and actually helps form the food bolus for smooth digestion.
Does ice-cold water boost metabolism?
Warming 500 ml of ice water to core temperature expends only ~15–17 calories—a negligible amount for weight management.
When are electrolyte drinks necessary?
Pure water is sufficient for workouts under 60 minutes. Electrolyte drinks become helpful during high-intensity sessions lasting over 75–90 minutes or heavy sweating in hot environments.
