How it is calculated
Allometric scaling dictates that muscular strength scales with cross-sectional area (height squared), while body mass scales with volume (height cubed). Powerlifting formulas utilize polynomial and exponential curves to neutralize body mass advantages.

DOTS: Coefficient = 500 / (A×Weight^4 + B×Weight^3 + C×Weight^2 + D×Weight + E); Points = Total (kg) × Coefficient; IPF GL Points: 100 × Total / (A − B × e^(−C × Weight)); Wilks: 5th-order polynomial.
Limits of the method
Calibrated for competitive three-lift powerlifting. Not applicable to Olympic weightlifting (which uses the Sinclair coefficient) or single-joint strength sports.

Why DOTS Replaced the Wilks Formula
The 1997 Wilks formula contained mathematical bias: it favored middleweight athletes (80–95 kg) while handicapping super-heavyweights (>125 kg) and extreme lightweights. The 2019 DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) equation, derived from hundreds of thousands of meet results, eliminated this distortion.
Understanding IPF GL Points
In 2019, the International Powerlifting Federation replaced polynomial equations with Gaussian exponential curves (IPF GL Points). Parameters are recalibrated every 4 years from World Championship datasets, distinguished between Raw and Equipped divisions.

Which formula is preferable: DOTS, Wilks, or IPF GL Points?
In commercial and alternative federations (WRPF, GPA, USAPL), DOTS is the gold standard. The IPF strictly sanctions IPF GL Points. Wilks remains useful for comparing achievements against historic 1997–2018 records.
Do powerlifting formulas incorporate age?
Standard DOTS and Wilks do not factor age. For Masters (40+) divisions, age coefficients such as the Foster or McCulloch age factors are applied multiplicatively.
Why are scoring coefficients needed when weight classes exist?
Coefficients determine best lifter awards ('Best Overall Lifter') by ranking champions across differing body weight categories on an impartial playing field.
