How it is calculated

Casey Butt, Ph.D. analyzed the anthropometry of elite drug-free bodybuilders from the pre-steroid era (1940s–1950s) over a 6-year study. The model demonstrates that natural muscle mass is mechanically limited by skeletal dimensions—wrist and ankle circumferences.

Formula

Max LBM = Height^1.5 × [sqrt(Wrist)/22.6670 + sqrt(Ankle)/17.0104] × [(BodyFat%/224) + 1]; Berkhan Contest Weight (~5% BF) = Height (cm) − 100.

Limits of the method

Designed for biological males. For biological females, maximum lean muscle mass is approximately 65–70% of male values due to endocrine profile. Assumes years of progressive overload and optimal nutrition.

Measure wrist between hand and ulnar styloid process. Measure ankle at the narrowest section directly above the ankle bones.

Why Joint Thickness Dictates Muscular Ceiling

Bones and tendons have structural load limits. The surface area of tendon insertion points is dictated by epiphysis width. The body downregulates extreme muscular hypertrophy beyond what the skeletal frame can anchor safely without tendon avulsion.

Martin Berkhan's Leangains Rule

Martin Berkhan established an empirical rule of thumb for shredded natural athletes (4–6% body fat): Max Stage Weight (kg) = Height (cm) − 100. An athlete at 180 cm will weigh approximately 78–80 kg on stage. Claims of 95–100 kg at 6% body fat at 180 cm invariably indicate anabolic pharmacology.

Frequently asked questions

Can wrist circumference be increased through strength training?

Practically no. The wrist consists of bones, ligaments, and tendons without muscle bellies. Wrist circumference is genetically predetermined and fluctuates by no more than 2–4 mm through bone mineralization.

How many years of training are required to achieve 100% of genetic potential?

With structured progressive resistance training, adequate caloric intake, and sleep: ~50% is built in year 1, 75–80% by year 3, and 90–95% within 5–6 years. The final 5% can take another 5–7 years of meticulous effort.

Why are social media physiques frequently displaying 48 cm arms at 90 kg and low body fat?

Such measurements are typically the result of anabolic-androgenic steroids, growth hormone, favorable angles, and pump lighting. A natural, lean 44–45 cm arm is exceptionally rare even among genetic outliers.

Does the Casey Butt model apply to female athletes?

For female athletes, predicted muscle mass and circumferences should be scaled by approximately 0.65–0.70 due to smaller muscle fiber cross-sectional area and baseline testosterone levels.

Does limb length influence muscular potential?

Yes. Longer levers require greater absolute muscle mass to appear visually full, but total muscle mass in Butt's model accurately scales to height raised to the 1.5 power.
