How it is calculated

23 items scored on a 5-point Likert scale across 4 subscales: Unconditional Permission to Eat (UPE), Eating for Physical Rather than Emotional Reasons (EPR), Reliance on Hunger and Satiety Cues (RHSC), and Body-Food Choice Congruence (B-FCC).

Formula

Overall IES-2 Score = Arithmetic mean of all 23 items taking reverse scoring into account (1.0 to 5.0). Scores > 3.5 indicate intuitive eating competence.

Limits of the method

The scale evaluates psychological eating patterns. In the presence of active clinical eating disorders, intuitive eating principles must be guided by specialized clinicians.

How to Complete the IES-2 Scale

1

Assess your habitual eating mindset

Answer according to your genuine attitudes and everyday behaviors over recent months.

2

Rate your level of agreement from 1 to 5

1 represents 'Strongly disagree', and 5 represents 'Strongly agree'.

3

Review your 4 subscale scores

Identify areas with scores below 3.0, as they indicate targets for nutritional and psychological healing.

Representative IES-2 Profiles

Low2.3 points

Diet Mentality Entrapment

Persistent food guilt, rigid meal scheduling, fear of carbohydrates, and eating triggered by emotional stress.

Focusing on dismantling food rules and practicing gentle nutrition is recommended.
Moderate3.4 points

Transitioning to Somatic Harmony

Effective hunger detection accompanied by occasional lingering guilt or environmental temptations.

Strengthening reliance on fullness cues will reinforce intuitive autonomy.
High4.4 points

Conscious Intuitive Eater

Effortless eating guided by biological hunger, stopping comfortably when satisfied, and unconditional food peace.

Optimal harmony between psychological well-being and metabolic health.

The Hunger and Satiety Continuum

The foundation of intuitive eating is attunement to the 1-to-10 hunger-fullness scale, preventing extreme primal hunger and uncomfortable overfullness.

Body-Food Choice Congruence (B-FCC)

Mature intuitive eating integrates taste satisfaction with how food makes the body feel physically, emphasizing nourishment and sustained energy.

IES-2 Core Components and Normative Standards

Validated by Tylka & Kroon Van Diest (2013). Benchmarks based on healthy community cohorts.

Frequently asked questions

What is intuitive eating?

It is an evidence-based physiological framework that reconnects appetite with internal hunger and satiety cues rather than external rules or emotional coping.

What does my overall IES-2 score indicate?

Higher scores (up to 5.0) reflect greater trust in somatic signals, peaceful relationships with all foods, and freedom from food-related guilt.

What if my Unconditional Permission to Eat score is low?

A low UPE score signals the presence of rigid food rules and moralizing foods as 'good' or 'bad', which often fuels the deprivation-binge cycle.

Does intuitive eating promote weight loss?

Its primary goal is establishing metabolic health and ending weight cycling. Research confirms it stabilizes weight while significantly reducing disordered eating risk.

How long does it take to complete the questionnaire?

Answering all 23 questions typically takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
